Born in Quito, Ecuador, Maria Usbeck moved to the US at 17 to attend art school, eventually becoming the frontwoman of New York new wave band Selebrities. After five years of singing in English, she returned to her mother tongue with Amparo, her 2016 solo debut, a deeply personal record rooted in her Latin American heritage and written and recorded across Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Portugal, Easter Island, Costa Rica and the US. Since then, Usbeck has continued to develop a singular artistic voice, earning recognition from Pitchfork, The Guardian, Stereogum, GRAMMY.com and Crack, while collaborating with some of contemporary music’s most forward-thinking artists. Her latest work, Naturaleza, extends this vision into something intimate and quietly radical: an exploration of beauty, stillness and connection.
